Statement by Dr Tedros on Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Statement by Dr Tedros on Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Language: English

Yesterday the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported a laboratory sample positive for the Ebola virus, after identifying a cluster of undiagnosed illness and death. Importantly, the government and the WHO have responded quickly – exactly what is needed to stop an outbreak from becoming an epidemic. The good news is we know how to prevent Ebola. And this time we have an Ebola vaccine, another tool in our arsenal.

Moving forward, the WHO and the global community need to ensure continued investment in a robust, country-level response. We also need to continue focusing on our efforts to achieve universal health coverage so that we can prevent, monitor, detect and respond to health emergencies like this one. And it’s high time that we as a global community show solidarity and commit to implement the International Health Regulations.
