WHO Executive Board announces the names of the 3 nominees for the post of WHO Director-General

The WHO Executive Board selected by vote the following 3 candidates to be presented to World Health Assembly as nominees for the post of Director-General of WHO.

Five candidates were interviewed by Member States today prior to the vote. The names of the 3 nominees were announced at a public meeting on Wednesday evening, 25 January 2017.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Dr David Nabarro
Dr Sania Nishtar

All Member States will choose among the 3 nominees by vote at the World Health Assembly in May 2017. The new Director-General will take office on 1 July 2017.

Initial screening of the 6 candidates nominated by Member States was conducted by the Executive Board. The Board then voted to determine a short list of 5 candidates.

The short list comprises the following candidates:

Dr. Tedros was the first of the six candidates for the position of WHO Director-General to present as part of the official candidates forum.
“I am a candidate for the DG of WHO,” said Dr. Tedros on 1 November, “because I believe in the power of this organization to make tangible and positive impact.” He continued, “I’m standing as a candidate to become the DG of WHO because I know what it takes to care for those in the world who need it most and who have the least and I know how to make sure WHO’s impact is felt on the ground in daily lives. I believe in WHO’s potential and I believe I will be able to help it get there.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Ethiopia’s immediate past Foreign Affairs Minister says he feels humbled to have served his country, even as he steps up to vie for the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr Tedros served in two ministerial capacities over the last twelve years. First, as a Minister of Health for eight years before taking the top diplomatic portfolio for the last four years.

Today Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Minister of Health, formally announced his candidacy for Director-General of the World Health Organisation at a press conference at the United Nations. He was joined by Ethiopian Minister of Health Dr. Kesetebirhan Admasu, African Union Commission Chairperson Dr. Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma, and Algerian Health Minister Mr. Abdelmalek Boudiaf.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s Candidature for the Post of WHO Director General

The Executive Council of the African Union on Friday (January 29) endorsed the candidature of Dr. Tedros Adhanom for the post of the Director General of the World Health Organization. His candidature is expected to be endorsed by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government at the weekend. The election is scheduled for May 2017 during the 70th session of the WHO Assembly.
